Due to Covid-19, adult websites are promoting their services as easier to access and open to more people.

Therefore, there have been reports that:

  • Child-related posts have increased by more than 200%
  • Internet Watch Foundation's (IWF) removal of child-related content from the internet has plummeted by 89% in four weeks
  • Twice a day, the charity updates a ’URL List’ which contains abusive material uncovered by one of their analysts or reported anonymously by the public
  • Girls make up 90% of those featured in child abuse materials
  • Since countries that receive reports regarding child-content complaints are in lockdown or are working from home, the process of removing or fighting such content takes longer and is more complicated
  • Smaller hosting providers often have a higher percentage of abusive content
  • Countries with a lower average income cannot effectively fight against cybercrime due to a lack of technology and financing.

In order to address this slowdown, the IWF is urging hotlines and abuse teams across the globe to be aware and do what they can to remove this material in a timely manner.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) is calling for platforms to disclose the number of child endangerment reports they receive for a more accurate picture of the current situation.

And lastly, while the Covid-19 management fund supports ventilators and vaccine development, we must remember that for children, these struggles continue.
