The Internet Watch Foundation is a charity monitoring Internet and removing webpages showing child abuse in UK. In their early annual report, they confirmed to have removed around 100,000 such webpages in 2018, one third more than the year before. This is not the only concern, but in addition, it is noticeable 40% of the pages they flagged for removal “displayed the sexual abuse of children aged 10 and younger, with infants and babies featuring more than 1,300 times” according to the source. Most of the content was posted outside the UK.
The home secretary Sajid Javid urged internet companies to start addressing this issue themselves, stating: “The horrifying amount of online child sexual abuse material removed by the IWF shows the true scale of the vile threat we are facing. This is why I have made tackling it one of my personal missions. I welcome [the IWF’s] impressive work and have been encouraged by the progress being made by the tech companies in the fight against online predators. But l want the web giants to do more to make their platforms safe.”
