This year, World Day Against Trafficking in Persons - 30 July - celebrates the work of first responders to human trafficking – those engaged in identifying, supporting, counselling and seeking justice for victims of trafficking – as the importance of their role is oftentimes shadowed.

Defining Human Trafficking

According to the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, this serious crime and human rights violation is:

  • "the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons by means of the threat or use of force, or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation."

Differentiation with smuggling of migrants

As it is oftentimes challenging to differentiate between smuggling and trafficking, this (video) Guide provides helpful information on how to do so.

Important Facts

  • The most common reasons for trafficking in persons are sexual exploitation, forced labour, forced begging, forced marriage, selling children — including as child soldiers — for removal of organs;
  • Women make up 49% of trafficked persons, whereas 23% are girls;
  • Sexual exploitation makes up 59% of trafficking cases, and 34% are due to forced labour;
  • Victims are often trafficked in their own countries, however, those who are trafficked abroad are brought to wealthy countries.
