27% of human trafficking victims are children, says Save the Children in a new article that aims to clear up myths on this sensitive issue which exists in every country in the world. According to the United Nations, trafficking has 3 crucial elements: the act itself, the means (abduction, fraud etc.) and the purpose (sexual exploitation, forced labour etc.).  But what are the myths and what are the real facts?

The facts

  1. Most of the victims know their trafficker
  2. Trafficking is not gender specific, but boys and girls are exploited in different ways
  3. Not every form of human trafficking involves sex and prostitution, the purpose can vary from organ trafficking to the recruitment of child soldiers
  4. Trafficking is not the same as smuggling, not every victim of human trafficking moves across borders
  5. Trafficking does not always come with the use of physical violence, it can happen through abusive relationships or threats
  6. Trafficking does not happen only in developing countries, every country is affected
