Stories from child survivors of the Holocaust could help children fleeing conflict today, say researchers from Aberystwyth University who study how past trauma affects the adult life of survivors. They believe these stories could also give insight on how refugees could be better supported in the UK.

Child refugees from the 1930s and 1940s describe witnessing violence towards members of their families. Some were also victims of verbal and physical abuse themselves. They continued to experience neglect and abuse years after arriving at institutions, which struggled to find suitable placements or offer psychosocial support for unaccompanied children.

January 27 marks Holocaust Memorial Day and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
