A series of school events will start this month as 20 teachers from 12 counties in Romania volunteer to promote inclusion of Roma children in school. The Mișto Avilean project of Terre des hommes Foundation in Romania launched the initiative this summer and organized a competition where dozens of teachers submitted their creative ideas on the topic.

The teachers that won the competition will organize the events. They have received a budget for events that will take place this autumn, in schools in: Alba, Bihor, Cluj, Dolj, Gorj, Mureș, Neamț, Olt, Prahova, Sălaj, Satu Mare and Vrancea. The events involve pupils in the theme of inclusion in a variety of ways — some online, most are exhibitions (photo, drawings made by children), or artistic moments (music, dance, theatre), and /or other creative events (debates, forum, meetings). They all follow the guidelines to prevent spreading COVID-19.

"Different, but united in sports” was one of the first events. It was organized in July under the coordination of Daniela Tutos, principal of the Christian School from Roma District Tinca (Bihor). The sports theme reinforced that sports unites and develops social skills, and children learn how social and ethnical differences enrich us all.

The pupils from the Roma community of Tinca, students from the private Christian School from the Tinca Roma District (Bihor), and from the theoretical high school “Nicolae Jiga”, Tinca participated, as well as pupils from Oradea. On two different days, the children competed in sports that tested their physical training, attention, speed of reaction and mental endurance.

The Mișto Avilean project aims to facilitate continuous and non-discriminatory education for all Romanian Roma children in migration. As the name of the project says (Mișto Avilean means "welcome" in Romanian), all children must feel welcome in schools in Romania and abroad. The project is funded by the European Commission through the “Rights, Equality and Citizenship” Program (2014–2020) and is implemented by Terre des hommes (Romania) in partnership with Terre des Hommes Hungary, AFEJI, France and Fundacion Secretariado Gitano, Spain. Details about the project can be found on misto-avilean.eu
