Being aware of your rights is useful knowledge for children as well as adults. In order to raise awareness among young people about their rights and obligations, they need to be informed or orientated. Alterkata has written a blog post about how and why she teaches and clarifies children's rights to her students.

She lists several reasons why it’s important to educate children and young people on the matter:

  • First, the rights being theirs, students can comprehend them easier and see them from their own perspective.
  • Second, being aware of their rights, children feel safe knowing they aren't all by themselves and that they have the right to ask for help. They have a sense of peace and tranquillity as they know they have opportunities; they just have to find out about them.
  • The penultimate argument—knowing about rights makes children more responsible. Taking responsibility is a learnt behaviour; once people know their rights and obligations, they know they must take their peers into consideration, and in a way, be responsible for them.
  • The final point is about making students realize the situation they are in. Having a realistic picture of how privileged they are, even if they take such prerogatives as education for granted, is crucial for learning to appreciate what they have.

Educating children about their rights is therefore clearly a useful and important duty, and unfortunately, its abstinence is a gap in public education. However, the situation is not at all irresolvable.
