Nick Jackson reports for The Oldham Times on Oldham-based filmmaker, Raabia Hussain, a deaf independent filmmaker experienced in writing, directing and producing, who helped a group of deaf young people learn the techniques of filmmaking in a virtual masterclass.

Organised by the National Deaf Children’s Society, and hosted by Raabia and fellow filmmaker Teresa Garratty, this online masterclass acquainted eight deaf young people with filmmaking techniques and vlogging, and gave them advice on how to make their content look more professional, and how to transfer those skills to other production styles post-lockdown.

This workshop was organised in partnership with Handprint Theatre, whose aim is to empower young audiences by making theatre for and with young people, using storytelling, physical theatre, and British Sign Language.

Both Handprint Theatre and the National Deaf Children’s Society offer a range of activities and workshops bringing deaf children and young people together, and enabling them to learn new skills, make friends and grow in confidence.
