The use of language is a powerful tool and the way we communicate about certain things can impact the lives of others. ‘Each and Every Child’ is a new initiative launched this May, which aims to transform the current public narrative and perceptions around care and care experience by identifying and tackling challenging assumptions and attitudes.
The initiative is based on research with people who have actual care experience, organisations, and the public across Scotland. ‘Each and Every Child’ offers a toolkit to support the people and organisations in transforming the ways of communication about care experience, so the life chances of care experienced people can be improved.
The easy and accessible toolkit aims to help in creating a new story in the hopes of reducing the stigma surrounding care and care experience. The toolkit emphasizes the importance of framing: how, when, and why to use it – and the ways it can help to limit the unfair and painful stigma, prejudice, and discrimination that people with care experience face.
It includes framing techniques that everyone can use when speaking, writing, or communicating about care and care experience – because how people talk about it matters. Transforming the narrative can stimulate positive change and make things better for each and every child with care experience.
