Ireland: With sexual abuse cases increasing, organizations cannot respond to calls for help due to underfunding.

Context:

  • Sexual abuse in Irish society “is an epidemic on a scale even more potent than Covid”
  • Recent series of inquiries and tribunals have raised awareness of Ireland’s sexual abuse history, yet problem prevails today

Issues raised:

  • Combination of both an under-resourced child-protection and criminal justice system currently exists in Ireland
  • Survivors do not receive the support or the safe space they need to speak about their trauma
  • Most survivors of sexual abuse do not seek professional help
  • COVID-19 pandemic has limited the available services even further, placing survivors of sexal abuse at increased risk

Underfunded Services

  • Organizations in the likes of One in Four cannot meet increasing demand due to underfunding
  • “In lockdown we had to close our waiting list for psychotherapy as the numbers contacting us went way beyond our ability to respond”
  • Lack of support increases vulnerability of affected persons
