Germany: although no vaccine has been developed and approved for children under the age of 12, manufacturers BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna are working towards it

Context

  • BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna started to conduct studies on younger children between 6 and 11 years of age
  • BioNTech/Pfizer expect final results available as of September, Moderna has not given a precise indication
  • Reliable data for children under the age of 2 is not expended until end of the year
  • Due to evolving nature of situation, it remains unclear whether there will be a STIKO recommendation for vaccination at all

Vaccines for children

  • Same mRNA vaccines, however the dosage is adjusted for body size and immune system of a younger child
  • Three divisions within age group: 6 months-2 years, 2- under 5 and 5-12
  • Still unclear whether children get two doses, yet likely

The way to an approved vaccine

  • Clinical trials take time, especially with children
    • Children were only included in studies later on
    • Children are under special protection and thus should be exposed to as little stress as possible
  • More difficult to find parent volunteers to allow children to be involved in the studies, and in the U.S. more participants are now required than originally

Vaccinations without approval

  • A number of doctors have vaccinated children “off-label”, a legal form of administrating medications to children who are at extreme health risk, yet severe cases of COVID-19 are “extremely rare” with children (Maske, press spokesman for German Association of Pediatricians and Adolescents"
  • For parents thinking about vaccinating their child beforehand the risk-benefit trade-off for is “almost zero”, because children are not small adults, and therefore guidelines for one group cannot simply be applied to the other (Klaus Cichutek of the Paul Ehrlich Institute)
  • Liability: the risk lies with the physician, it cannot be passed on to parents
