On the 4th of November 2021, the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School including Cyberbullying is celebrated! This year it will be celebrated under the theme “Tackling Cyberbullying and Other Forms of Online Violence Involving Children and Young People”

Background:

  • Together with Member States, UNESCO decided to mark the first Thursday of every November to celebrate and create awareness about this bullying and cyberbullying in 2019
  • By November 2020, UNESCO celebrated the first International Day against Violence and Bullying at School including Cyberbullying, under the theme “Together against Bullying in school”

Issue at hand: With countries responding to COVID-19, children’s lives and education have become increasingly more online. While online access presents opportunities for connection and learning, it is also increasingly putting children and young people at the risk of online violence.

  • In Europe, 44% of children who were cyberbullied prior to COVID-19 reported that it had increased during lockdown
  • Data from multiple countries that children, in particular girls at the age of 11 to 13 years, are increasingly at risk of being targeted by criminal sex predators

Cyberbullying has a negative effect on academic achievement, mental health, and quality of life of students. Children who are cyberbullied frequently are

  • Three times as likely to feel left out at school;
  • Twice as likely to miss out on school;
  • Have a higher tendency to leave formal education after finishing secondary school.

Aims of 2021:

  • To raise awareness about the responsibility of the education system to address online safety, digital citizenship and technology use
  • To educate about the problem of online cyberbullying, its consequences and the need to put an end to it
