First academic bulletin in Bulgaria

The Bulgarian Council for Refugees and Migrants has published the first academic bulletin "Refugees - Today and Tomorrow". The initiative, supported by the UN Agency for Refugees in Bulgaria, aims to contribute to the exchange of information among the academic community, field experts, and between asylum seekers themselves.

The bulletin addresses the following aspects of forced migration:

  • International standards for refugee protection; Asylum system in Europe and Bulgaria; Opportunities for integration; Political, economic and social consequences for the host communities.

In particular, a set of useful resources can be reviewed:

  • Statistical data and analyzes, incl. legal, in the field of international protection;
  • Information on the activities of institutions and non-governmental organizations supporting refugees, incl. children in Bulgaria;
  • Interviews with experts and representatives of academia;
  • Personal stories shared by refugees living in Bulgaria;
  • Current academic publications, courses and initiatives.

Some of the current topics covered in the first issue are:

  • Measures in response to the global pandemic of Covid-19, adopted by the Bulgarian government and their impact on applicants and those granted with international protection;
  • Annual review of 2019 regarding asylum seekers and refugees, incl. children - main trends, changes and challenges, incl. integration practices;
  • Legal analysis on access to state territory in the context of Bulgaria;
  • Master's programs at Bulgarian universities;
  • Current situation in Greece.

Four more editions are planned by the end of 2020 by the team of the editorial board - Vanya Ivanova PhD, Boryana Raynova and Tsvetomira Hristova.

Each of the issues will be available on the academic portal dedicated to the topic of forced migration. 

The first Bulletin is available only in Bulgarian language.
