The pandemic has brought lots of negative consequences for us, but there were some people, who benefitted from it. Young offenders for example got the chance to participate in an initiative that allowed them to gain a new qualification.
Leeds Youth Justice Service (YJS) has created an opportunity for young people to take part in activities like making a bird box or cooking a chocolate cake.
Young people also got accredited awards from the staff thanks to the YJS's partnership with AQA Unit Awards scheme.
These were the following:
- Making a wooden box
- Planning, preparing and baking a chocolate cake
- Creating zendoodles
- Emotional wellbeing
- Preparing simple meals
Each discription of the awards consisted of an entry level, a lerner style and a curriculum link.
The most vulnerable children were also provided with laptops and food parcels. In this report you can find out more about the work of the staff.
According to the operational manager at Leeds YJS, the biggest challange for their children is their own situation that has got worse due to the Covid-19 as some families have to face poverty, freezing cold and the loss of their income.
