This webinar is being organized as part of the regional project "Building Relationships through Innovative Development of Gender-Based Violence Awareness in Europe - BRIDGE" which has the aim to strengthen the statutory response to gender-based violence (GBV) affecting children and youth on the move in EU countries.
The BRIDGE project is supported by the European Union’s Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme (2014-2020) and is implemented in Belgium, Greece, Hungary, Malta and Romania.
A series of webinars are being organized as part of the BRIDGE project to discuss issues of GBV and share good practices.
About the webinar:
The purpose of the webinar is to present the project outputs of the PROTECT - Preventing sexual and gender-based violence against migrants and strengthening support to victims regional project, implemented by the International Organization of Migration (IOM) and its partners, discuss the challenges migrant victims of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) encounter when they would like to access to support services in Europe and also, how the PROTECT project addresses these issues.
The webinar would be interesting for everyone who would like to know more about the main issues identified in service provision for migrant victims of SGBV in Europe and the ways they can be tackled.
Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) may be physical or psychological and it can take the form of domestic violence, sexual harassment, social exclusion or even exploitation and trafficking in human beings. Women and men, boys and girls and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people (LGBTI) can all become victims of sexual and gender-based violence. The PROTECT project aims to strengthen national support services for victims of sexual and gender-based violence to make these services available to refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, be them children or adults and including LGBTI people. The PROTECT project includes awareness-raising activities on preventing sexual and gender-based violence among these communities.
The project is implemented by 12 IOM country offices (Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia and Spain) and 8 NGO partners, Legebitra (Slovenia), Le monde selon les femmes abl (Belgium), Fundación EMET Arco Iris, Asociación Rumiñahui, Movimiento por la Paz (Spain), Arq Psychotrauma Expert Groep, Rutgers, and Pharos (Netherlands) between October 2018 and March 2020. The project is funded by the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme of the European Union (2014-2020).
In coordination with national authorities, first responders and service providers, IOM and the partners work together to tailor the following activities to the national contexts and implement them:
- Strengthen and adapt existing national support services for victims of sexual and gender-based violence to coordinate better and include refugees, asylum seekers and migrants;
- Build capacity for professionals who work with and for refugees, asylum seekers and migrants to identify and address the needs of victims and potential victims of SGBV more effectively;
- Empower and inform refugees, asylum seekers and migrant communities about SGBV and how to protect themselves from the risk of becoming a victim of sexual and gender-based violence.
