In an aim to reduce the number of vulnerable children and families in the Western Balkans and Turkey, the European Union (EU) and UNICEF announced the start of a €5 million programme on 31 March 2021. Moreover, as part of the partnership, children and parents will be provided with better access to public services.

Ms. Afshan Khan (UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia) and Genoveva Ruiz Calavera (Director for Western Balkans, Directorate General for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations) emphasized, the EU-UNICEF multi-sectoral programme aims at:

  • Safeguarding children’s right to education (providing digital tools and quality digital content) and health
  • Improving the availability of Early Childhood Development services
  • Protecting and ensuring equitableness, inclusiveness of national delivery systems
  • Contributing to building more resilient systems in the Western Balkans and Turkey

Since the beginning of the pandemic, UNICEF has made various efforts to reduce the impact of the pandemic on the lives of children and families by providing support and services. In the Western Balkans, the total amount of EU assistance exceeds €3.3 billion. Additionally, with the help of the EU, the Western Balkans countries joined the EU Joint Purchase Agreement and the EU Health Security Committee.
