Doctors can now legally prescribe playing games. Children aged 8 to 12 suffering from ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), which impacts approximately 6 million children worldwide, can now get treatment through a game-based device, EndeavorRx.
EndeavorRx, a special non-drug treatment which helps to improve ADHD associated symptoms. It does not fully replace other forms of therapy, but 'is intended for use as part of a therapeutic program that may include clinician-directed therapy, medication, and/or educational programs, which further address symptoms of the disorder'.
In studies of more than 600 children, determining whether participants demonstrated improvements in attention function as measured by the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA), academic performance measures, and other assessment tools, no serious adverse side effects were reported.
This is the first therapeutic case granted marketing authorization by the FDA.
This approach may inspire the IT sector to make more game-based, non-drug treatments for patients worldwide.
