A primary school replaced homework in December with 'acts of kindness'.

The aim is to spread the true meaning of Christmas by practising kindness for friends, family and the community. Participants have to do something nice to brighten someone’s day.

This is the third occasion in which the school has made such changes; last year gratitude was the focus of activities.

Children can participate in three ways:

  • create a Kindness Diary by collecting pictures or writings about their acts of kindness.
  • write kind notes about each other and put them on an installation in the school to raise each other's self-esteem
  • come up with a class project to help the community during Christmas.

Vice Principal Íde Ní Mhuirí said, 'Our message to the children is very simple: they can be the reason somebody smiles today and they can definitely help make this world a better place for others and for themselves.'
