Realising Children’s Rights – embedding child rights in the daily practice of care professionals (CHILDHUB WEBINAR)

About the webinar:

This webinar will present the results of the two year EU co-funded project “Training Professionals Working with Children in Care” (2015-2016), which was implemented in eight European Countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, France, Hungary, Italy, Latvia and Romania. The training handbook developed during the project, entitled “Realising Children’s Rights” builds on the four principles of the UNCRC while embedding them in the daily reality of alternative care professionals. A total of 881 alternative care professionals were trained on how to apply a child rights based approach to their daily work. Evaluations undertaken on the impact of the training highlighted that developing the capacity of alternative care professionals to implement a child rights based approach to their work is not only rewarding for the child in their care, but also the professional. The training enables participants to see things from the child’s perspective in order to better understand their needs. In order to ensure maximum sustainable impact on the issue of training professionals to apply a child rights-based approach when working with children and young people in care, young people with care experience were consulted on various activities and topics related to the project’s objectives. The webinar is primarily aimed at care professionals working with children in care.

Continued efforts are urgently needed to ensure that care professionals working with children in care receive training to embed a child rights-based approach in their daily practice.

About the presenters:

Julia Kovalenko is an Advocacy and Child rights advisor at SOS Children’s Villages Estonia since 2012. She has a Masters of Arts degree in International law, specializing on Human Rights and Equal Treatment. One of her main responsibilities is to promote actions aiming to prevent violence against children, especially those in alternative care and to initiate and maintain dialogue with the authorities and other stakeholders in order to improve the quality of alternative care and provision on child rights to all those in care, as well as foster prevention of family separation and reunion of families. Ms. Kovalenko has a vast experience of carrying out various training on human rights, child rights, equal treatment and parent competences such as Incredible Years (positive parenting), and Toomas Gordon parent efficiency school as well as training for care workers on violence prevention and child rights, external audit of residential care institutions AudTrain, etc. . Julia had also developed for the Estonian Minister of Social Affairs a Guide on diminishing the number of cases and prevention of violence against children in care, Guidelines on Internal Evaluation in residential care and much more.

Krešimir Makvić is employed as a National Advocacy Advisor in SOS Children's Village Croatia (part of a global organization SOS KDI). He has initiated accountable activities & proactive effort to improve policies and practices that violate the welfare of children at risk of losing parental care or who have already lost it. He has strong experience in leading successful advocacy initiatives to achieve sustainable change for Children that ensure the full enjoyment of their rights in an environment that provides care and support, to promote changes that lead to the creation of policies and practices (e.g., round tables, coalition building, lobbying and negotiation, raising awareness, participation in networking, conferences and seminars). Mr. Makvić is a professional educator with extensive experience in direct work with Children and Youth and in the design and implementation of projects involving Children and Youth.

Florence Treyvaud Nemtzov is currently working as Project Manager of cross-national EU co-funded projects that aim at building the capacity of care professionals in order for them to be able to embed child rights in their daily practice when working with children and young people growing up in alternative care. Holder of an MA in International Relations from the Geneva Institute of International and Development Studies, she has been focussing on child rights over the last 17 years, and specifically on the deinstitutionalisation process and the advancement of alternative care services. Ms. Treyvaud Nemtzov has a rich advocacy and project management experience with complementary skills in strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, group facilitation as well as event management.
