According to the La Strada association, cases of online sexual abuse are increasing among teens in the Republic of Moldova. The rise can be linked to excessive use of gadgets and lack of knowledge regarding internet safety.

The number of online sexual abuse cases among teens almost doubled in 2019, compared to the previous year. Two years ago, 26 teenagers sought help from the website singuronline.md, and this number has increased to 42 in 2019.

Every second teen who reports online sexual abuse is blackmailed by a peer. Although 40% of the victims don’t know who acquired and distributed their intimate photos, the style and methods show that the perpetrator is most likely a teenager as well.

Girls are the most likely victims, especially teenagers between the ages of 13 and 15. Professionals warn that girls often hide these experiences from their parents, teachers or other guardians usually due to the tense relationship they have with the adults in their lives and for fear of a hostile reaction.
