Greece's first integrated online platform for adoption and fostering will be implemented by the end of January. It will help reduce and significantly simplify the adoption process, according to the country's Deputy Minister for Social Solidarity, Domna Michailidou.
'Our policy is to de-institutionalize children, and the key to quickly resolving this problem is the electronic registry we have created and operates, which will link prospective parents or foster parents with children,' Michailidou told members of Greek parliament.
The integrated online platform for adoption and fostering will include seven state-administrated institutions and 47 private child protection organizations. Furthermore, the platform will offer information about the children in need of a home and prospective parents, provided by various social service agencies. The information will cover the personal background of children, medical history, and other information relevant to the adoption and suitability process.
In Greece, the current adoption and fostering law adopted in 2019 reduces the adoption time from the average 6 years to less than a year, and allows same-sex couples to become guardians or foster parents to orphan children.
