Amnesty International UK raises concerns following media reports suggesting that Facebook is building a version of Instagram for children under 13.

Co-Director of Amnesty Tech, Rasha Abdul-Rahim, said that:

  • Building a separate version of their platform is not an adequate response when it comes to social media companies’ responsibility to protect children and young people online
  • 'Facebook poses one of the biggest threats when it comes to children’s privacy.'
  • Because of the opaque terms and conditions, Facebook will be able to gather large amounts of data about children
  • Children will be at risk of being bombarded with targeted advertising and incendiary content, as well as Facebook’s algorithms that 'all too often amplify disinformation and divisive content in order to prioritise engagement'.

According to a recent UN report on artificial intelligence, privacy and children’s rights, more than 72 million pieces of data are collected for each child by online advertising companies before children reach the age of 13.
