Nick Barnets reports for DW on efforts taken by local communities on the Greek island of Lesvos to help refugees, particularly families with small children, fleeing from violence in Syria. The continued economic crisis in Greece has crippled its responses to the humanitarian crisis, and the absence of a unified international response has forced locals and tourists to the frontlines to help the growing numbers of refugees. In the past week alone, on just the island of Lesvos, over 9,000 refugees have landed. Through the Facebook page "Help for Refugees in Molyvos" Melinda McRostie helps to coordinate donations by locals and tourists to the area. British expat Eric Kempson uploads daily videos to his Youtube channel to show the dire situation, to raise awareness and donations, and to draw attention to intimidation he faces in helping these refugee families find access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.
