When children are suspected or accused of a crime, there is a tendency to believe that they are small persons, therefore they have ”small cases” and finally they have only ”small rights” of defense. But these cases may have long lasting consequences on child’s growing personality. For this reason, it is necessary to have and respect a set of specific quality standards when representing a child in court.
The quality standards guide has been made to be used by lawyers and all those who represent children.
The guide has been developed within the CLEAR-Rights project, which is being coordinated by Terre des hommes regional office in Europe and implemented in partnership with the Alliance of Lawyers for Human Rights, Defense for Children Belgium, Defense for Children the Netherlands, PILnet and Terre des hommes Romania, co-funded by the Justice Programme of the European Union (2014-2020).
