The majority of nursery workers are encountering children facing extremely challenging and complex backgrounds; and many feel under-prepared for the task

An alarming amount of nursery staff has stated that they are not prepared to deal with children with complex backgrounds and challenging emotional needs. Over 900 of them were questioned during a research in the UK, done in the last three months of 2020.

Problems of children that nursery stuff needs to deal with on a daily basis include

  • Trauma, abuse
  • Domestic violence
  • Substance usage in the family
  • Bereavement of a close family member
  • Aggressive or violent behaviour
  • Mental health issues
  • Social or emotional difficulties
  • Effects of the coronavirus pandemic

Lack of education (both academic and emotional) has been reported as the main reason for the situation.

This is why The Anna Freud Centre is announcing a series of free webinars aimed at nursery and other childcare workers. The first webinar will be looking at: Managing challenging behaviour in early years settings It will take place on February 24.

Other webinars in the series will include: Supporting bereaved children in early years settings and Caring for children in early years settings who have experienced trauma.

Alongside the webinars, the Early Years in Mind network will continue to offer free and tailored attachment informed advice to all early years professionals.
