Malta is a signatory of the international convention on child protection, but children from non-EU countries are no longer eligible to reside in Malta if their parents’ yearly salary is under €19,000, plus €3800 per child. There are a few exceptions to this policy, but many families, including Serbian families, are struggling to have their requests granted.
When the policy came into force, parents formed a group that seeks acceptance, as in some cases, they lack only a small amount of money to reach the minimum requirement to stay. A member of the Committee of the Serbs, Maja Brown, said that in the past, changes in the system meant that some accepted foreign workers and their families while others rejected them.
Parents are in despair. They want a normal family life for their children, and now their future is uncertain.
