Many children and families across the globe have been affected by COVID-19. Currently, there is no exact information on the long-term effects of this illness, but this review tries to report and investigate the available evidence to understand and define the potential effects on children.
The summary was made by UNICEF after collecting the societal impacts and accelerated solutions for individuals and households. As the available database is still quite deficient, mainly in low and middle-income countries, the summary reports on the information and evidence from previous pandemic experiences, such as SARS, MERS or tuberculosis.
Though there is some positive news and results concerning potential breakthroughs for vaccines, there is still a long process ahead while children and families need immediate support.
Households that were more vulnerable before the crisis are suffering disproportionately the negative impacts of the pandemic situation; reduced healthcare services, online education and social distancing place a much more significant burden and restriction on them. In these cases, there is an undoubted need to find scalable and cost-effective solutions to the continued and deepening impact of the COVID-19 crisis.
