The UN Office on Drugs and Crime produced a report on trafficking trends and patterns, confirming increased trafficking based on the data from 142 countries. According to the report, children account to as much as 30% of victims of human trafficking, among whom girls are majority. The drivers of trafficking differ across regions, with trafficking in Africa and Asia often motivated by labor exploitation, while in Europe sexual exploitation prevails. UNODC chief Yury Fedotov explained that "human trafficking has taken on horrific dimensions as armed groups and terrorists use it to spread fear and gain victims to offer as incentives to recruit new fighters." He added that "this report shows that we need to step up technical assistance and strengthen cooperation, to support all countries to protect victims and bring criminals to justice, and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”.
