During the pandemic, children hit strongly by Covid-19 have regressed.

According to the Ofsted schools watchdog, the consequences are the following:

  • there are some, who were potty-trained already before the lockdown, but no reverted to nappies
  • some forget basic things like numbers and the use of knife and fork
  • the older children have lost physical strength and skills such as reading or writing
  • signs of mental distress is also detectable, because of the increased eating - disorder and self-harm
  • lots of children are out of school and learn at home as home-educated, especially among minority families as they are at greater risk
  • children with special educational needs and disabilities have been affected mostly in care and education

Ofsted is worried about children at risk of neglect, abuse and exploitation, because child protection referrals fell, while schools were closed. Right now half of the schools are empty.

Concerns are also about the schools' budgets for covering the absence of staff and the cleaning tools used for protection against Covid-19.

A petition for the government has been launched to reimburse the schools for the costs. They also started a national tutoring programme, providing support to the most disadvantaged kids and a £1bn  Covid catch - up fund for schools.
