The #Chances4Children campaign, launched by Children and Young People Now, aims to create a platform where practitioners, teams and leaders are able to share their experiences and innovative ideas about working with children and young people. Although children did not experience the severe health threats of Covid-19, school closures and the economic impact of the pandemic resulted in disruptions in their everyday lives. For example, food poverty has risen sharply and the economic consequences could bring serious setbacks in eradicating the attainment gap.
Goals of the campaign
- "Raise awareness of issues that prevent children and young people reaching their potential
- Champion practice and initiatives to tackle issues from which others can learn
- Support children’s sector leaders in their work to support vulnerable groups
- Provide a platform for children and young people to share their hopes and aspirations
- Ensure the needs of disadvantaged children remain at the forefront of policymakers’ post-pandemic recovery plans"
Great initiatives
- Social enterprise aims to reintegrate young offenders to the labour market by selling face masks created by them
- Coram Life Education published an online toolkit to help to reduce the anxiety of primary school pupils when returning to school after the lockdown
- Youth organisation in London has started daily delivery of food and education materials to families where parents lost their jobs due to the pandemic
- Hundreds of young people have been nominated for the Jack Petchey’s community awards, launched by The Jack Petchey Foundation to recognise the work young people do for their communities during the pandemic
- The Sheffield’s Children in Care Council created a book of poems on the current situation written by young people, who have experienced the care system
- Virtual football stadium tour for care leavers in Leicester
