Kindness and generosity towards classmates come handy when it comes to tests and learning at school.

According to a new study, helpful kids at schools score higher in tests and make more progress than their peers.

Explanations can be:

  • children who are seen kind are more about to get positive attention from their teachers
  • the skills involved in caring may help on more academic tasks
  • taking another’s perspective provide kids with an opportunity to stimulate their own brains
  • being friendly can also help to establish a support network to help one cope with challenges

Researchers found that children with prosocial behavior performed better on 3 measures:

  1. progress towards meeting early language goals
  2. ability to match sounds with letters
  3. standardized math, reading and science tests

Developing prosocial behavior in children may also help to close the disadvantage gap with those children, who come from underprivileged background.

In the future, studies should explore whether the results can be applied in different geographic and cultural contexts as well.
