A standard school year for a child contains 190 days. Just until now, children have lost on average 74 out of it due to Covid-19, school closures and lack of access to remote learning. The report was revealed on Tuesday by Save the Children.
Unfortunately, this situation is even worse in the poorer regions of the world, like in Latin America, the Carribbeans and South Asia. These kids missed school almost triple times more thanin Western Europe.
Three out of every four children said to have negative feelings since the outbreak of the pandemic, for many reasons:
- ambiguity over getting back to school,
- no contacts with children, teachers and friends,
- loss of lilvelihoods in the family
- violence and insecurities in household relationships.
One out of 10 children said that they would not return to school, when they reopen and 8 out of 10 teachers believe that they learn little or nothing at all.
According to Save the Children, the biggest education emergency in history with the unequal accessibility for education widened the gap between countries and within countries.
The responsibility of governments is huge: they need to take immediate actions, otherwise some children may never return to school. Also, children out of school has a high risk when we think of child labour, child marriage and other forms of abuse.
