UK: Report finds that young victims of child sexual abuse find themselves facing difficulties in accessing support and acknowledgment.

The Report: Engagement with Children and Young People

  • 43 page report, published June 2021 by Independent Inquiry Child Sexual Abuse
  • Considers how children should be better protected by listening to 56 victims and survivors of child sexual abuse between ages of 11 and 21
  • 77 child sexual abuse specialists and support workers involved

Issues identified through conversations with young victims and survivors:

  • Police and other professionals reported to be dismissive of peer-on-peer abuse
  • Police managed their privacy and confidentiality concerns poorly, putting victims at risk
  • Not enough was being done within schools to recognize and respond to child sexual abuse and exploitation, with many saying they experienced insensitive responses
  • Children shared negative experiences of their involvement with the NHS run Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
  • Relationship and sex education in schools largely inadequate, some children received no lessons at all
  • Social media and the internet: children urged creators of social media apps and internet platforms to take greater responsibility for children’s safety
