The UK Council for Internet Safety (UKCIS) is a collaborative forum through which government, the tech community, and NGOs work together to ensure the UK is the safest place in the world to be online. It is a voluntary and non-statutory body whose focus is mainly on children. Their latest masterpiece is the Digital Passport. The Digital Passport is intended for parents, carers, and children to help them have a better online experience.
It is inevitable that children will spend time online, therefore the experts of UKCIS deemed this protective tool essential. Below you will find a brief explanation of the Digital Passport.
The DP resembles the passport you use to cross borders. It consists of pages that a child and their parent/caretaker can fill in together. There are several questions that will help a carer understand the inner world of their child and their online experiences.
Questions for the child:
- What do you like/dislike doing online?
- What’s going well/not so well?
- Do you want to talk about anything that's bothering you?
- What have you learned so far by spending time online?
Questions for the adult:
- Which devices is the child using to go online?
- Which social media accounts do they have?
- When playing, are they in contact with strangers?
- How do they feel after being online?
Children can decide what to share with their trusted adult and what to keep secret. You can work together to negotiate and create an agreement on the terms and conditions of digital life.
