A document with twelve recommendations to combat antigypsism capped off Western Balkans Summit Against Racial Discrimination, held in Prishtina, on November 7 and 8, 2022,
This regional summit gathered heads of governments, representatives of institutions, civil society organizations, journalists, as well as other regional stakeholders.
Through eight panels and a workshop, participants of the two-days summit emphasized challenges that Western Balkans countries face in fighting racial discrimination, as well as measures to deal with them.
Its panelists were Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti, Ambassador of Switzerland Thomas Kolly, Ambassador of EU Tomáš Szunyog, Ambassador of USA Jeffrey M. Hovenier, Deputy Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia Artan Grubi, Minister of Human Rights and Minorities in Montenegro Fatmir Gjeka, and Deputy Minister of Health in Albania Denada Seferi among others.
“Don’t suffice with inclusion, ask for participation, since that makes us equal,” appealed Prime Minister Kurti to marginalized communities, while US Ambassador Hovenier called on societies to not tolerate intolerance.
Swiss Ambassador Kolly also reiterated that antigypsism needs to be fought through joint efforts.
The participants also spoke of the importance of this summit, as a platform for exchanging ideas and experiences related to fighting racial discrimination in Western Balkan countries.
The summit was organized under the patronage of Office of the Prime Minister – Republic of Kosovo, supported by Terre des hommes – Kosovo Delegation, Voice of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians, and Foundation HEKS, within the project – Social Justice for Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians, funded by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
