"The network of organizations for children of Serbia expresses great sadness and concern over the recent shooting in a Belgrade elementary school.

We sincerely sympathize with the families and children who experienced this tragic event. In order to prevent such tragedies in the future, we call on the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the relevant ministry to take quick and comprehensive measures to improve the safety of children in our schools. This includes increasing the number of school psychologists, pedagogues and social workers to support students and teaching staff, while improving cooperation with parents to proactively respond to warning signs of potential violence.

Also, we urge parents to take responsibility and ensure that firearms are out of reach of children. We believe it is vitally important to support children who have survived trauma. That is why we call for providing psychological support to children and school staff in order to overcome the shock and trauma after this tragic event.

Also, we call on the media to respect the rights of children and to refrain from publishing information that could threaten privacy or otherwise violate the rights of children who have survived trauma. Children who have experienced such a traumatic event deserve the right to privacy and support, so we ask the media to be responsible in reporting this incident. It is important to focus on prevention and support measures, in order to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future, instead of sensationalism and inappropriate reporting.

The network of organizations for children remains committed to supporting the safety, well-being and rights of every child in Serbia. We need to work together to create a safer and more supportive environment for children in our schools and communities."
