Extracurricular activities help children keep up social connections and maintain a feeling of normal life during the pandemic.

Although remote teaching has its challenges, teachers are trying to include more extracurricular activities to help students spend their time more creatively.

These opportunities are especially helpful for teenagers, who may suffer more socially during isolation. Clubs and activities help them connect with others and deal with stress during these times.

Some ways teachers are trying to incorporate these activities into their daily lives include:

  • Making these classes part of the daily schedule
  • Introductory videos and a virtual fair to help students choose extracurricular activities and clubs
  • Using communication more familiar to children during online meetings: emojis, memes, chatting - this helps them relax and express themselves more freely
  • Record meetings for students who cannot attend
  • New ways of collaboration: e.g. instead of performances, students record their own materials

In some cases, when children still attend school, teachers find new, safe ways to organize these clubs:

  • Smaller groups, e.g. splitting attendance over two days
  • New activities to replace prohibited activities like dances and sports
  • Using safety measures during these activities: wearing masks, using hand sanitizers, keeping a distance
