Trauma-informed schools

Barnardo’s Scotland new report "Supervision in Education – Healthier School for All" asserted that children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing will be better if we support the education staff by supervising them to improve their own mental health and wellbeing.

Based on the findings of their survey, we can see the two highlighted themes:

  • Why supervision is needed: 65% of the respondents answered high level of stress and no structure in place to discuss their feelings at work. They reported that these problems impact on their ability to properly support their pupils and they often take those feelings home with them.
  • What difference supervision could make: respondents stated supporting staff mental health and wellbeing, ensuring safe practice, getting better outcomes for pupils, and allowing time and space for staff to process and reflect on their work and its impact as the differences that supervision could make.
