On October 29th, Albanian Media Council expressed concerns about the un-ethical way in which the case of children returned to Albania from the Al-Hol camp in Syria was being presented in most of the countries' media. These news have published information with the names and photos of children, which showed obvious disturbing and worrying images of their aggravated conditions.
These publications are in serious violation of the Code of Ethics as in no case should they provide personal information of children; neither the photos nor the names. The statement mentions that: "These publications will remain online for years, continuously exposing children in the future, but also when they reach adulthood. The children have not chosen to make public this tragic moment of theirs; others are exposing them. The Albanian Media Council urges the media to maintain an ethical and professional standard, and urges them to remove photos and names of these children from current publications. Journalists are required to be professionals and not to publish cases of this nature. The Albanian Media Council urges government authorities not to repeat such cases, to be more correct in protecting children, and not to deconstruct their identities under any circumstances except when necessary to protect their lives."
