To start with, what is TikTok? TikTok is a Chinese social networking site dedicated to creating and posting diverse video content. It became extremely popular last year. What is characteristic of TikTok is that it is used by a large number of children and young people, both globally and in the region. In short, TikTok is dominated by music content in which children and young people imitate popular choreography, but also answer questions in Q&A sessions.

TikTok doesn't offer much more than Instagram or other social networks, but the principle behind which TikTok works makes it easier to access content that kids post. You don't even have to be a user to view content on this application (except for closed profiles) — just install it on your phone.

If your children are using TikTok you may want to:

  • Talk to them and see what content they post and follow
  • Help them with the privacy settings for their profiles
  • Explain that no one has to and cannot be perfect, and that the idealization and idolization of others is misleading
  • It is important that they know who to contact if someone comments negatively on them

The purpose of this text is not to prohibit your children from using this or any other social network, but to understand what the application is, how it is used, and to help your children protect themselves.
