This advocacy brief from UNICEF highlights major disparities in the distribution of public education spending.

Some of the factors that still prevent poor children of getting access to quality education are discrimination due to gender, disability, ethnic origin or language of instruction, physical distance from schools and poor infrastructure. Data shows that gender discrimination combined with poverty has resulted that 1 in 3 adolescent girls from the poorest households never goes to school.

According to this report, the lack of resources available for the poorest children is causing a learning crisis, as schools fail to provide quality education for their students.

The advocacy brief notes clear guidelines to governments to urgently address equity in education funding and prioritize public funding for lower levels of education.
