Interoception is understanding what is happening inside your body and is known as the eighth sensory system. It is both the perception of the physical and emotional signs of the body, and can be conscious or unconscious, but is definitely a life skill.

Young students cannot always describe their feelings properly. Teachers can help them to understand and express the relationship between their sensations and emotions.

How can students be taught to better express their emotions?

  1. Connect the body to the mind with the help of drawing or writing exercises
  2. Introduce children to high-quality words through storytelling to improve their ability to express their feelings
  3. Teach language accuracy and the nuance of language to help them express themselves more precisely
  4. Use shades-of-meaning lessons to teach how words can mean almost the same thing, but with a slight difference
  5. Use metaphor and ask students to draw comparisons
  6. Sketch out the meaning, sometimes drawing a picture works better than finding the right word

The value of recognising and naming feelings and finding the right words should be shown to students.
