According to the official website - www.mmuncii.ro, Ministry of Labour published in a public debate a project to change and complete the law 272/2004 on the protection and promotion of children's rights.

This is the most important law that encompasses the rights of children in Romania and the role of families, authorities and public institutions.

The legislative changes proposed are the following:

  • changing the notion of extensive family from all relatives until 4th grade to only relatives that the child had relations and contact with in order to fasten the adoption procedure;
  • for any decision undertaken by the institutions the child needs to give written consent if the child is over 14 years old;
  • strengthen the capacity of specialists in schools in order to combat the high level of violence;
  • all General Directions for Social Assistance and Child Protection need to appoint someone to assist minor asylum seekers;
  • making clear the alternatives for the residency system from institutionalization to family houses, apartments, emergency centers and maternal centers.
