Opening outdoor schools may be a solution for socially distanced education in Scotland.
The outdoors has already been part of the Scottish curriculum and has proved to work efficiently. Now, more and more educators and policymakers consider it a solution to reopening schools. Maree Todd, children’s minister, claims that outdoor childcare facilities may reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection and transmission. The many nurseries which operated outdoors during the lockdown, are an example of the functionality of the system. One manager reported that playing in gardens involves fewer tools that are touched by children and more space for their independent crafting. However, while learning in the fresh air may be healthier and safer, creating outdoor educational materials may cause some difficulties for educators. Therefore, teachers should get support and training to prepare for this challenge. Following all of the guidelines, experimenting with outdoor schooling and gradually implementing it into education will yield benefits.
