The local edition of the famous fundraising campaign, Swimathon, has raised over 117,000 euros for 25 NGO projects in Romania. The 460 virtual swimmers (59 of whom were individual swimmers, the rest were teams) were pledged by 4,266 donors.
Fundația Comunitară București has organized the Bucharest Swimathon since 2013, but the 2020 Bucharest Swimathon campaign (#SwimAtHome) was a special event due to COVID-19. Unlike previous swimathons, it did not involve a competition in a pool, but rather, a virtual ”competition” between supporters (fundraisers) who chose their own way of raising money. Some involved funny activities (swimming in the bath or a team of dogs), others were simply posts on social media.
Individual donors offered 2,000 euros for a project involving minors in detention
Terre des hommes Foundation Romania, which participated with a project dedicated to minors in detention, raised quite a lot during this campaign for their project, 'Sports and Games Save the Future of the Young”. The project was listed in the Bucharest Swimathon (online edition) in June and raised, with the help of volunteers, 9,575 lei (almost 2,000 euros) in about 20 days. Althought this is almost half of their initial target, it is a good amount given that it was the first time the Foundation participated in such a campaign and that all donations came from individuals. The money will help 200 minors in a detention center in Craiova, where Tdh wants to use "Movement, Games and Sports" training to build up their social abilities. Donations were asked via email, a Facebook campaign, and through the support of volunteers. Famous footballer Roman Bürki also supported the cause with a message via Instagram.
The 2020 Bucharest Swimathon campaign (#SwimAtHome) raised 565,641.75 lei (over 117,000 euros), all by and for the participating NGOs and their projects.
