The Open University is offering a free Adavnced 12 hour course on children and young people’s participation through its OpenLearn facility to its registered students.

This course begins its participation agenda by stating that although listening to children is reasonably well established, enabling children to share in decision making in contrast lags some way behind. Children and young people's participation, emphasises that the adoption of an integrated approach to participation by different sectors of the children's workforce is of crucial importance.

After studying this course, you should be able to:

  • Define the complexity of participation for children and young people
  • Compare and contrast different cultural perspectives and experiences of participation
  • Reflect critically on personal professional practice and assumptions regarding participation.
