UK: Centre of expertise on child sexual abuse (CSA Centre) released guide on communicating with children who have or may have been sexually abused

Background

  • Studies suggest that 15% of girls and 5% of boys experience some form of sexual abuse before the age of 16
  • Many professionals who work with children lack the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to identify possible indicators of child sexual abuse and respond effectively to them
  • Professionals often wait for child to first talk about the abuse, putting the weight of stopping child sexual abuse on the child

CSA Centre

  • Aim to reduce the impact of child sexual abuse through improved prevention and better response
    • Improve knowledge and understanding of nature and scale of child sexual abuse
    • Improve identification of and response to all children who have experienced sexual abuse
    • Enable more effective disruption of child abuse through better understanding of the subject
  • Multi-disciplinary team working closely with academic institutions, local authorities, health, education police and the voluntary sector
    • Adressing gaps in knowledge by producing and share information about child sexual abuse
    • Develop a multi-agency Child Sexual Abuse Response Pathway and resources
    • Engage with professionals and provide training and support for professionals
  • Funded by the Home Office

The Guide (released Feb 2022)

  • Seeks to help give professionals the knowledge and confidence to act for children who are or may be victims of child sexual abuse
  • Aims to help communicate with children in relation to child sexual abuse, including when concerns arise that such abuse is happening
    • Explains what may be going on for children when they are being sexually abused
    • Explains what prevents children from telling about their abuse
    • Explains what professionals can do to help children tell them what is happening
  • Aims to help professionals respond to, have the knowledge about and consider the situation each child is in
    • Provides guidance of how conversations with children can be planned and conducted
