Bosnia and Herzegovina became the home of over 23,000 refugees and migrants that were trying to reach western EU nations through Croatia. Most of the newly-arrived refugees and migrants were located near the Croatian border in a small city named Bihac. According to, Church World Service (CWS) in Bosnia and Herzegovina the resources and the capacity of its Center for Social Welfare, are limited and underfunded.
CWS team raised the concern about the situation of refugees and migrants there. According to CWS, they were often demoralized and hopeless, they had spent all of their money, others have been turned back from various borders numerous times and some faced the Croatian border patrol’s violence.
On May 1, CWS launched the program “CWS Strengthening Refugee/Migrant Systems of Protection and Cross-Border Cooperation in Bosnia.” The program is still ongoing with the aim to improve the protection of unaccompanied and separated children and young adults, increase the capacities and involvement of local protection systems in refugee and migrant response, and improve cross-border cooperation. "This new program will last for at least a year, with the option to extend it if needed", according to CWS.
