In a recent study published in PLOS Medicine, it was found that reducing the quantity of TV ads about food and beverages high in fat, sugar or salt (HSSS) would decrease the level of obesity among children in UK.
If TV ads on HSSS are to be controlled between 5.30am and 9pm, then there would be fewer children suffering from obesity. Children would see less HSSS ads on thus the average caloric intake would decrease. Number of overweight children would also reduce by 120 000. Overall, the study shows that children would lead a healthy lifestyle and eat healthier food. Controlling TV ads would also result in benefit of £7.4 billion for UK.
Yet, controlling ads between 5.30am and 9pm will not result in any changes if HSSS ads will continue to be showed after 9pm and in online platforms. For a change to occur, children should be exposed to HSSS ads less in all devices.
