Ina Verzivolli, of UNICEF Albania, was invited to the ‘Dita Jone’ program on A2 TV, to discuss issues related to online safety and the concept of ‘Friendly Wi-Fi’.

According to Verzivolli, many parents are aware of the dangers the Internet poses to their children, but faced with the choice of letting their children become familiar with new technologies and the digital world, or isolating them out of fear for their safety, most do not know how to act.

UNICEF has responded to this challenge by adopting the ‘Friendly Wi-Fi’ strategy — a UK-based certified service that filters online content for illegal material and pornography. UNICEF has not only absorbed this innovation, but has incorporated it into an even wider online safety program for children.

One of the first steps of this program was encouraging businesses in the community to join the ‘Friendly Wi-Fi Tirana’ initiative. Businesses in the New Bazaar area joined the Safe Internet initiative for children and citizens to increase their social responsibility to customers, and thus, those who frequent the area's bars and cafes with their children don’t have to worry because local Wi-Fi connections are safe and filtered from harmful online content.

Business engagement for the ‘friendly Wi-Fi’ initiative is a good start to creating safe spaces for children to use the Internet and future steps will aim at increasing the range of filtered Wi-Fi.
